How Much Does it Cost to Have Your Wisdom Teeth
Removed
The cost of having your wisdom teeth removed will vary from patient to patient. It will depend on factors such as how many wisdom teeth you need removed, whether the wisdom teeth are impacted or just decayed, whether you have health insurance or not and if you require local aesthetics only or additional support like Nitrous Oxide (Happy gas) or Penthrox or Sleep Dentistry. The cost can be considerably high, if you need the procedure done under General Anaesthesia in a hospital.
A rough estimate for having one wisdom tooth removed which is a relatively straightforward operation would be around $250.
If you are lucky and your wisdom tooth has erupted in a normal position without decay and is being removed for precautionary reasons you could have it removed for in between $150 – $200.
If your wisdom teeth are highly impacted, which means they are growing at an angle which is causing them to grow into surrounding teeth it will cost more.
But usually when all 4 wisdom teeth are removed, the cost could be as little as $1000, If done in Chair with Local Anaesthetics.
You will also need to take into consideration the cost for the painkillers, antibiotics, antiseptic mouth wash and the time you will need to take off work.
If you have health insurance the cost of having your wisdom teeth removed could be even nothing. It will depend on your health insurance policy. Sometimes you may be required to pay a fee to cover the excess.
Consultation
You will meet with a dentist who will take x-rays to get a clear understanding of what surgery is required. The dentist will take x-rays of your wisdom teeth to get an image so they can explain to you exactly what is required.
Surgery
The surgery generally takes in-between 40 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on how many teeth you required removed and how difficult the surgery is. You may need half an hour or so to recover from the aesthetic.
Follow Up
Some people will be required to come back to the dentist a few days later to check and make sure that everything is well. The dentist may have to remove sutures if they were used during the surgery. Usually we use self-dissolving stitches. But many times, they overstay and cause some local irritation. And hence, they may need removal in a weeks’ time.
